Those Damn Vegans...

I’ve never really wanted to, nor felt the need to, write anything about how I’m vegan. Sure, I’m super passionate about it and I strongly believe that veganism is better for the world, but I never wanted to be one of those people who wanted to shout from the roof-tops ‘I’M A VEGAN’. I’ve only been vegan for about 8 months, but I can honestly say that I can’t believe I ever ate animal products after knowing the things that I now know.

I really thought that everyone was pretty accepting of veganism, but I recently read a post on the ‘Girls Advice’ page on Facebook and my views have definitely been challenged. The original post was a simple enquiry about who eats meat, who’s a vegetarian and who is vegan. But I was shocked to read such intense and often unnecessary comments about ‘vegan agendas’ and how ‘vegans shove their beliefs down other people’s throats’. Some people compared veganism to a religion and others just commented about how they were craving a big juicy steak.

Reading all the comments really got me thinking. Originally, I was quite hurt by them, I’ve never thought that I was shoving ‘my beliefs’ down anyone’s throats. I don’t personally know of any aggressive vegans either. Primarily, veganism is about promoting peace and love for animals. For many, including myself, it also goes deeper. It’s about promoting a healthy diet, helping the environment, and really all in all just aligning my diet with my beliefs.

So why does veganism cop so much slack? I think it’s because when you challenge someone’s views, or their way of life, the first instinct is to defend yourself. You don’t want to feel like what you’re doing might be wrong! We’ve been raised in a Western society where eating animal products is the norm. We don’t even question it. So, when someone starts to ask questions and challenge the norm, it’s generally widely frowned upon. The same way it was with slavery, women’s rights and more currently same-sex marriage. Overtime, those originally radical ideas are now widely accepted rights. Veganism is a movement that promotes animal rights, and while majority of us aren’t familiar with the idea of always considering another sentient being and putting their rights before our desire for taste, what’s to say that it always has to be that way?

When someone turns the mirror around on you and shows you a different way to exist, it’s the small steps that open you up to the idea. Instead of just shutting veganism down, we need to educate everyone in a friendly way. No-one likes animal cruelty, so let’s start aligning our diet with our beliefs.

As John Lennon said, "I don't think animals were meant to be eaten and worn. We have enough resources to do without them. It's common sense to me that you shouldn't eat most of the chemically treated rubbish most people seem to stuff themselves with."

The Witching Hour

In folklore, the witching hour is a time of night associated with supernatural events. In darkness, when secrets are carried with the wind, unspoken words can become obsessive thoughts. What happens when the clock rolls past midnight and ticks into the early hours of the morning? What happens we we lie restlessly in our beds, tossing and turning and praying for slumber to overcome us?

In the witching hour, our thoughts seem almost supernatural. It's as if everything is heightened and things appear as extreme. Many girls out there lie awake pondering why he hasn't texted back or how to be....... well, better.

A lot of us will plan ways to topple the patriarchy. Long gone are the days of simply trying to remember if we'd fed out Tamagotchi's (unfortunately). Our society has pushed many women and girls to questions what they're told and how they're treated. Young women, and girls, are constantly fumbling with the idea that we're trying to grow up the best we can, in a male dominated culture. In a world where cat-calling is so common it's grossly misplaced as a compliment, where men don't believe in the gender pay gap, where women are pressured sexually in workplaces and where women's bodies are more controlled then gun laws, women are still being oppressed. While we have made strides from previous years, the fact that a lot of men still view women as lesser humans is disgusting.

But femininity is strong. Being a girl is empowering. And we're growing up stronger than ever. No longer are females the subject of ridicule. Armed with confidence, knowledge and power, girls are here for equality.

Defining the Area Between Black and White

Although it's predominantly seen as a streetwear brand reserved for those 'woke' individuals, Off-White has previously released it's Resort 18 collection for females. Although it may be a few collections behind, the Resort 18 collection really caught my eye. The collection, titled 'Wilderness', and rightfully shot against beautiful greenery,  explores androgynous dressing combined with an unexpected femininity. The use of florals and light delicate material shows the brands growth into a feminine market.

From the use of base colours such as black and white, to injected bursts of pinks and greens, this Resort 18 collection puts a floral spin on an otherwise masculine brand.

Neon Weeping

9:02pm. The neon city lights bounce off her windowsill and cast dancing shadows across her room. The uneven musty wooden floors hold dirty piles of clothing, glittery heels and last night’s Thai takeaway. Her neighbours from the apartment above her were playing music loudly, the thumping beats pillowing down through the floorboards. Her blanket was sodden with white wine that she had spilt trying to climb into bed. Her hands were sticky. Like honey. She resisted the urge to run her fingers through her hair. It felt like 90 degrees in her dark room. Her tear-stained face held many secrets. She sighed as her fire-red fingernails traced the dusty windowsill.

She’d gotten much more intoxicated than she’d originally anticipated. Navigating her way through another monotonous day, only to come home in-time to watch the news. She ordinarily endeavored to avoid the news. The fear inducing nature of the programme often darkened her heart. Hearing about the negativity gripping the globe instantaneously brought down her mood. But this one day, she had decided to watch it. Oh, what a gaffe that was. From the threat of a world war to Trump’s hate acts against transgender people, she’d slipped into a hole of negativity that only $3 white wine could fix. After pouring 4 rather full drinks in her borrowed wine glasses, she’d become a sobbing mess of a girl. Three regrettable texts to a painful past later, she had found herself laid upon her unmade bed. Alone. She felt oh so alone in this world. It didn’t matter that simply three stories beneath her was a thriving bustling city full of life. The neon shadows in her dark room made everything feel surreal. Like she was in a tainted dream state. She lay her head down on her baby pink silk pillow and wept silently. This was why she avoided the news.

Wes Anderson's Intrinsic Essence of Youth

With socially charged preconceptions of youth, it's rare to see a director or a movie that challenges society's views on stereotypical discourses of children. While Wes Anderson's films are usually renowned for their visual impacts and quirky characters, his portrayal of children takes on a more mature and adult theme.

Wes Anderson portrays majority of youth in a mature and wise way. Children are never dismissed; their ideas are instead credited and acknowledged. It's often found that the children in the film take responsibility for their actions and accept the outcomes of situations with a better attitude than most adults. The young girls in Anderson's films almost always have mature minds and react to situations in a calm and thoughtful way, something which young women don't typically tend to deal with in films and TV shows.

While Anderson typically employs thoughtful camera angles, it can be seen that his portrayal of youth extends to specific shots where children are featured. Young boys and girls are often seen at eye-level or even from an upwards angle to present them as dominant in the situation. His use of colour and overall mood all contributes to his view of children being wise.

With such an opposing view in mainstream media, having a film director who promotes the essence of wise youth is crucial for upholding and further developing the views on youth in film.

Third Degree Burn

Your mother warned you of fires. She constantly reminds you of the time you were five and touched the stovetop claiming the colours drew you in. Maybe it was the warmth the dragon's stomach emitted, you have never felt such a warmth. Not from your fathers embrace or the lips of your first love.

She warns you, says the boy with ember eyes will destroy you in the end. He's awoken something in you that's been asleep for quite some time. That smothered flame in the pit of your chest. You wake up coughing ashes and his calm voice is a cool stream at 11:00pm when the sky is dark as coals.

"Never play with fire" she warns you as you dangle a math between two shaking fingers.

I'm fire-proof. I'm fire-proof. I'm fire-proof.

You almost believe it. Gasoline coats the floor in a puddle of his reflection. One slip, one misplaced finger and we all goes down in flames.

You've drowned in his kerosine eyes and there are burn marks to prove it. His touch sinks into your flesh like a third degree burn.

Resort 18' Baby ✧*

Athletic stripes. Block colours. Oversized garments. Turtlenecks. Circular detailing.

The resort 18' runways showcased a variety of new and reworked styles, with many designers either showcasing floral feminine textures and cuts, or androgynous thought-provoking layers and garments. Though the fashion calendar may be half a year ahead of Australia, not seeing any of the current international trends trickle down into our stores until about six months after they're shown, the resort 18 collections are a great way to gather a sense of what will be popular in the next coming months. Plus it's another excuse to spend hours trawling the internet and day-dreaming over expensive pieces of clothing that you may never own..... guilty as charged!

Check out some of the best (in my opinion) resort 18 collections from the most recent season!
。^◕‿◕^。

#1 Solace London

Combining simplistic block colours with artistic and unconventional cuts, Solace London showcased beautiful garments made from ribbed fabric, shiny leather style material and dark-wash denim. An almost androgynous collection, Solace London proves that style and comfort can easily be streamlined.

#2 Edun

Attaining a funky and fresh vibe, Edun's resort 18 collection once again uses block colours and textures in their collection. Taking inspiration from African colours and patterns, this collection evokes a sense of happiness and refreshment. Edun is also focused around sustainability and promoting a sustainable fashion industry, which really interests me as well.

#3 A.L.C

With a darker colour palette, androgynous cuts and my personal favourite, turtlenecks, A.L.C puts forward the idea of a powerful young woman who doesn't let her style define her, she lets it only contribute to her domination. This collection focuses heavily on turtlenecks, darker colours with pops of mustard and brings it into the current fashion spectrum by including white sneakers as the continuous footwear in the look book.

#4 Maggie Marilyn

Maggie Marilyn takes on classic style in this resort 18 collection. Stripes and ruffles are the focal point of this collection, with the main colours being red, white, blue, green and yellow, once again all block colours. Taking a minimalistic approach with oversized garments, Maggie Marilyn puts forward the idea of letting small amounts of colour draw your attention in outfits.
