Conversations With The Moon

Every night she waits patiently for the sound of her father's door to shut gently. The familiar click is the last echo of sound through the dark house as her father settles into bed. Holding her breath, she opens her bedroom door and tiptoes out, her feet padding softly on the carpet. Closing the door behind her, she creeps down the hallway past her siblings bedrooms where they lay in bed, their heads in their dream lands. She lets out a soft sigh of relief as she reaches the lounge-room. Her hands managed to find the window ledge in the darkness, and she lifts the glass. Fumbling awkwardly, she heaves her body out the window and lands on her two feet. She smiled as the wind instantly began blowing her hair in beautiful dancing motions. Leaving her house behind, she began on her nightly journey.

Her feet finally found the coarse dirt as she came off the roads and in a thick gathering of trees. It wasn't long until she found herself atop a rocky waterfall. The water cascaded down in a trance like state. The soothing sound of crashing water against rocks mixed with the moonlit forest. It was like pure ecstasy. She lay down. Smiling up at her familiar friend, she greeted the moon's light with ease, much like the soft breeze that blew through the tree tops.

The moon began to tell her about his day. He talked on and on, eagerly about the sun and how he craves her sweet sticky warmth. He knows he can never have her, two souls on a different course yet so besotted. Conflict in its purest form.

"My child," The moon said. His tone changing every so slightly. To an untrained ear, it would have gone unnoticed. But she looked up intently at the moon.

"There will be a boy who will come into your life. A boy with hazel eyes and a wicked smile. He'll show you the world. You'll think that you can't live without him. His venomous words will drip with meanings of feelings left untold. Those eyes you will love will soon become depraved and virulent. His wandering eyes won't rest on you alone when the moonlight replaces the sunset. You'll spend countless days tossing and turning, wondering if it ever meant anything. He'll keep turning you and turning you, like you're his toy. Until one day you break."
"But my child, just hold on. Things will get better. You'll become your own world"

And with that the moon disappeared breathlessly behind a cloud. She closed her eyes and listened to the sounds of the wind hugging the trees.

BFM Promo Shoot

Last Tuesday I attended a photo-shoot for Courier Mail. Perched high on the Kangaroo Point cliffs, I met with the rest of the team for a promo shoot for Brisbane Fashion Month. Being an intern for BFM, I helped out on the shoot with Carly Vidal-Wallace. Alongside Carly was stylist Laura Churchill and Isabella Longginou, a fashion designer.

Isabella wore a dress made by her, which I was super envious of. Carly wore two outfits throughout the shoot and Laura was dressed achromatically in an outfit which gave no reference to the blaring hot sun. All in all, I was incredibly envious of all their outfits and the entire shoot just cemented me desire to be a stylist!

Gucci Pre Fall 2017

I thought no Fall collection could top Acne Studios, but Gucci's latest runways has exceeded all my expectations. It's outlandish print, embellishments and embroidery outshine it's previous collection and cement it as an attention grabbing collection.

The collection, which was recently shown in Milan, heavily featured plaid, floral prints, animal images and snakeskin. There was an Asian influence with paper floral umbrellas and wooden handle bags. The collection keep in tune with the predicted colours of the season.

The most appealing aspect of the collection is it's amalgamated feature. Producing clothing that fits both a male and female wearer acknowledges the growing social movements and is a way for people to take a stand against the recent negative political arena in America.

Though it's still hot and humid, Gucci's Fall 17 collection has me yearning for print plaid prints and cooler weather to rock embellished boots in.

In The Great Yonder

She lay in the soft yellowing field. The grass grew high and wildly, reaching into the sky. Small patches of white wildflowers scattered themselves amongst the grass. Nearby was a roaring highway, but she couldn't hear it. She was nestled in her own world protected by the grass they grew around her. The sun shone down brightly but she blocked it with her fingers, moving them slightly to cast dancing shadows upon her face.

It had reached early afternoon when she finally sat up. Sticking her hand gently in the air, She caught a small wildflower floating in the wind. It's soft petals caressed her hand as she brought it down to her face. Inhaling it's intoxicating scent, she closed her eyes slowly as a soft whimsical smile crept onto her face, The smell reminded her of when her mother would bring home fresh flowers from the Sunday morning markets.

Encapsulated in it's innocence, she realized it was dusk by the time she finally opened her eyes. The sun was barely peeking out from horizon and the sky was painted with exotic hues of purples and pinks. In one seemingly last powerful gust of wind, she held her arm up in the air and let the tiny flower go, watching it float away into the distance, back on it's original course. With that, the wind dropped and it was silent once again. The only sound was the humming of the highway. The sun said it's last good-byes as it disappeared from the sky and the moon took it's place. She smiled at it's familiar glow and lay her head back down amongst her grassy kingdom.

Lovely Ramblings

His lips were red like a Marlboro packet. The kind of seducing red that you can't peel your eyes away from. Red as the blood coursing through your veins, in an ethereal motion.

His hands were large and coarse. They slipped through mine, gripping them tightly.

I put my head to his chest. He smelt fresh, like all the good things in the world originated within his pounding torso. The hum of his heartbeat was mellifluous.

When I looked into his eyes I saw the stars, the galaxies.

Looking into his eyes was like looking at the sun. You couldn't look for too long, you had to look away. It's like they were burning you. For it was like an array of iridescent colours dancing to a song that no-one but him could hear.

Lying there was like being in oblivion. The world peeled away slowing, leaving only two souls intertwined.

Pre-Fall 17

It's manic, it's chaos but most of all it's beauty. Fashion houses work tirelessly all year round producing collections for us to gaze our eyes upon and dream of owning. As the Pre-Fall 17 collections have been released, New York has become a hub of the latest fashion. Stylish show goers have descended upon the city that never sleeps, to cast their fine eyes on the Pre-Fall 17 runway shows.

While I could talk on and on about the countless shows, there was one collection that stood out to me the most. Acne Studios, a Stockholm brand, embraced a vintage twist.

Creative Director, Jonny Johansson, has taken the Pre-Fall 17 collection in a different direction. Running with the 70's inspiration, as many other fashion houses have done in the past, Johansson emulates 70's style through texture, floral prints, embroidery and coloring. Even featuring the occasional denim and leather piece, the collection showcases movement and mood.

Another aspect which really attracted me to the collection was how Johansson blends the gender lines. Acknowledging and showcasing the growing movement of openness and acceptance, Acne Studios shows the public that there doesn't have to be a clear gender line, males can wear female clothing and females can wear male clothing. The androgynous look is being seen so much more and it's so important that people in a position to spread awareness and make a difference should utilize that.

Adding another touch of culture to the collection, Johansson has employed Primal Scream frontman Bobby Gillespie as a model for the lookbook. "I've always been interested in the self-expression clothing can give. Often I've been inspired by the self-expression of musicians. As I was finalizing the collection, I realized I'd designed a look for Bobby Gillespie" Johansson has said.

If the garments drew me in, then the story behind them made me stay. Acne Studio's Pre-Fall 17 collection is a major standout for me.

Bummin Around

I can't count the number of times the tiny little black hands have zoomed around the numerical face of the clock, since I have last read a book that excited me. Books hold a certain charm, an alluring essence, that always entices me to read. Yet the books I find myself stuck into the most are never ones that I buy from a book-store. They always come from the back of op-shops from a dusty old table or are stolen from my mothers bookshelf.

It had been paining me lately that I was too busy with my growing number of assignments, combined with other worldly responsibilities, to read and hunt for books as regularly as I would have liked. So when one of my classmates suggested I read 'Dharma Bums' by Jack Kerouac, I was warmed by the Friday afternoon suggestion. Although I much prefer to crawl up under a tree with a physical copy of a book, my responsibilities demanded otherwise so I searched up 'Dharma Bums' online and got stuck into reading it.

It didn't take long to figure out that this book aligned with my beliefs about life and I found myself wanting to keep on reading it. If I'm being completely honest, I'm abstaining myself from finishing it simply because I find the writing so enlightening and I want it to keep going. However I know it must come to an end, let's just say I'm planning a timely demise, waning myself off gently.

To say that 'Dharma Bums' is only a book would be too simple. Written in the 1950's about the Beat Generation, Jack Kerouac writes about a man's adventures through meditation, Buddhism and compassion. Exploring ideas of being a free-spirit and not following the social norms, the book shows readers a simple life that isn't complicated by material desires.

The positivity and compassion that this story evokes really resonates with me. It's fragrant language and beauty promotes a happier and simpler outlook on life, which only confirms strengthens my beliefs about spirituality and positive outlooks. Plus it's super awesome to find a book which speaks so highly and prominently features meditation!

So consider this a suggestion from one soul to another, 'Dharma Bums' is a story that will alter your outlook on life and make you appreciate the smaller things.
